"The Storms Within the Human Breast" Liszt: Orage from Première année de pèlerinage
The etude is gorgeus and unique. My motther was an amateur pianist but she performed that etude surely in a slower tempo but with some kind of charm and I was absoltutely mesmerized. I think i wanted to become a profefisonal pianist afther i heard this etude performed by my mum .She was i already tell you an amateur.
Very inspairing. Thanks a lot for your dedication and your passion❤
Found your commentary balanced and understanding, thank you, though I suppose he played 'to the hall' in concerts, which microphones cannot catch, hence a clearer sound in studio recordings. As to missing notes, his intention was never to bore an audience, he said, slightly in contrast to some modern and 'serious' pianoplayers. In old age, with absolutely straight fingers, he made some of the best 'Bach-sounds' I have heard recorded.
Just want to point out that, unless you’re playing in a competition or a degree recital, nobody can tell you whether you should use a score, nor does anyone really care, I have found. It’s a good thing for students to play from memory, in order to “learn how to learn” scores; but once they graduate, they are of course free to do as they wish. In general, if one knows the piece by heart, it will sound best and most convincing if one is not reading in performance. On the other hand, if one is unsure about the details of the score, for whatever reason, it will be best to read. It’s really as simple as that.
Wow That was strange. I watched this video when you uploaded it. Absolutely brilliant. Then a few days later watched another channel called scary interesting. And at 10:14 when you were talking about that narrow strait in the Dardanelles they uploaded a story of a sub that sank there after it had crashed into a ship i think 22 onboard died in a watery grave there. Gave me a shiver
I’ve always loved this Ballade and figured there had to be some program Liszt had in mind. It’s very dramatic and expressive, certainly not straight abstract music. You’ve finally shed a new light on this masterpiece. It all makes perfect sense. Thank you! Liszt is endlessly fascinating to me, and his endless inspiration has yielded several books that incorporate him and a video on his life. An amazing man and sadly too often marginalized by haughty critics, yet without doubt the most innovative genius of his era. Thanks again, Cole, for this wonderful video!
A “cleaner” and comparable (in terms of tempo) to Bachaus is the 1950 lazar Berman recording. I don’t like it as much because he doesn’t have much imagination as bachaus in terms of shape, but it’s no more amusical than pollini’s much slower recording.
One the finest Chopin nocturnes ever recorded
Arrau studied with the last student of Liszt …the tempo is fine but it’s not legierro enough
Exactly …Feux follets needs to be transparent and full of colors !!! Rarely rarely done like this
Maybe it's just because it's not the sort of performance I'm used to for this piece, but I find Margulis's performance quite wrongheaded and even pretentious. Cortot was much better.
Great video of a great piece of music. Love the thumbnail btw!❤
Thank you for your insights and wonderful playing. I am orchestration this piece currently and what a ride this piece is.
Gershwinini???
One of the greatest mazurka players of all times … knew how to make them dance …:most pianists can’t even dance a mazurka 😂
Knew him well and recorded all his etudes and his Porgy…. Great job !

Agreed !! Finally, a young person who really understands the difference of the great artistry of piano playing as compared to the common place belligerent woodpeckers of today! Check out Moritz Rosenthal Chopin Etude Op posthumous Ab Definitely hors pair
Geza Anda ! Check it out
The Ukranian pianist's bringing out of the middle line was scrumptious! How on earth did he manage it? Quite sublime!
Thank you! I've just found your channel and each minute is worth watching. I have found another quite interesting method, which I've heard of some weeks ago and which works quite well for me: Practicing fast passages in a moderate tempo, but as soft as possible or even without sound at all. This means that the fingers are moving very differently and I was really surprised how effective this is if you play it then again in normal speed and for example mf or f. Maybe this technique does not work for professional pianist, but for me as an "intermediate" player it helps a lot. Do you know this technique and do you have an opinion about it? Thank you! Danke!
Glenn Gould made a teenage recording that blows the socks off every other one. It's on my box set of all Gould's video recordings. The speed and precise articulation is unbelievable.
He did that as a joke. It was him and one other pianist playing the chords
@@Chopin-Etudes-Cosplay It's possible. Gould was a notorious prankster. I couldn't find any evidence for your statement though. His student recording of the Weber Konzertstuck is evidence that he could play extremely fast and with great accuracy.
He played Mozart without any affection for it. Worst Mozart playing ever.
I like the Guiomar Novaes recording.
vitari margoulis' interpretation was just lovely. I wonder how many thousands of revolutions Chopin has performed in his grave due to the butchering of his music by 'brilliant-I-know-best' piano jocks. Most of these inepts are actually getting paid for their assassination as well...my contempt of them is infinite
First time listener...fellow pianist, but I'm an amateur .........you, sir, are not! I learned from you! Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!! New subscriber

Traductor.
You finally made a videi on this piece, this has got to be, by far, my favourite liszt piece and on my top 5 pieces of all time, absolutely love it, defenetly learning it in a couple of months
Thanks for the great work! Only at 10:29 the last note of the melody in the red frame is A Becare.
Really amazing stuff! Your entire performance is great, but your approach to the "distant version" of Hero's Theme really stands out- what a special moment.
Thanks for making this really fantastic video about one of the truly great pieces in the piano literature, and bravo for your performance!
Do you really believe this Etude is more difficult than the one that preceeds it, in C major?
@@robertwalker2052 it’s all relative, but for me most definitely yes!
Shouldn't she stand where the pianist can see her? In any case, bravi.
do you play on an electric piano?
Your work is so amazing, needed and underrated... You deserve a lot more views, which i'm sure will come with time. Congrats and thank you
Dmitry shishkin's interpretation was always my favorite . It's the fastest on youtube and it's incredibely accurate . He plays al the chords correctly
What an excellent video. Thank you
Hi! Amateur pianist here, just discovered your amazing channel and subscribed. Lots of incredible and valuable videos!! So… I have a question for you. I have an extraordinary gift for memory, I have never struggled with fears of a memory slip during a performance, so I’m very blessed with that. However, I am so dismal at sight reading scores to the point where learning a new piece is painful and slow, including something like a Bach Invention, which technically is nothing for me, but just reading it and piecing it together takes a very long time. I also suck at playing things “perfectly”. Do you have tips for improving sight reading speed or a video I can refer to? I learned Chopin ballade 1 which I wasn’t ready for when I started but a year later, I just performed it, though it was far from perfect. I just feel like I’m really missing something. Learning the score was difficult and took me a long time. I don’t want this to be as much of an issue, since I want to learn new rep quicker and breathe the musical life into it that I desire. Thanks so much for any help!
Also, memorizing and building up a piece with proper fingerings/perfectly takes me forever as well, which is why I feel like I can never get a “mastery” performance of anything. It’s been an enormous roadblock and my #1 discouragement lately.
I’m listening to your discussion- did you crank up the “reverb” on the piano for this piece? It sounds very echo-y to me… I’m keen to hear what you do with those scales at the end (a la Arrau!!) when I listen to the performance
Amazing analysis. I am currently working on Au borde d'une source and it is such a joy to practice... The different variations of the main theme are alwayas rich in counterpoint while still being simple enough to recognise the main theme. An example of how Liszt was able to deliver beauty when he was not thinking about pure virtuosism
you know.. i can't really stand Liszt, but i'm going to watch this for the sake of all your effort.. and the thumbnail.. 😅
Thank you so much for your beautiful rendition of this wonderful piece. I had a question regarding slurring. In the menuet bar 7, 9, 10 the LH ideas aren’t connected physically when you play it. My teacher who studied at Juliard is adamant that unless you can’t physically connect the idea you must play it connected so the top voice in this instance would be connected. What are your thoughts on connecting ideas when there is a slur? Thank you! ❤❤❤
Always a good day when you upload
What a handsome fellow
I know it isn't the main focus of this video, but that theme from the Ring cycle you mention is extremely reminiscent of the intermezzo movement from Beethoven's Sonata in A major (op 101)
